Swan Corner Workshops begin

Freya and Turtles admire their
artwork  at Swan Corner
Yesterday (11th March) we began workshops at Swanshurst School with 30 young volunteers eager to improve our environment - making it safer and bringing people together to discuss parking, traffic and other issues, thanks to funding from Near Neighbours, as part of Hall Green Arts & Kings Heath Centre for Space Exploration project.

Not too surprisingly, young people raised similar concerns to other local residents about what the problems are - here's a summary of the problems they identified:

The group also had a good grasp of some of the problems local residents have already identified.  Here is a summary of what they thought problems residents would have:

Given the problems have been around for a long time what difference can we make?  Well, I suppose that's where a group like Swan Corner Community Group, newly started, could be influential in bringing about the conversations, raising issues with appropriate bodies, and getting out and doing things.

The Swanshurst Group will be making a big impact straight away in bringing about may of the Community Group objectives over the coming months by:

  • Improving the local environment, creating a garden space for people to use
  • Talking to local residents and finding out what's important to them through surveys
  • Creating a dance performance outdoors at Swan corner, for residents and locals
  • Adding wood sculpture to complement the gardening, improve the environment adding value to Swan Corner
There's a lot of other parts to what Swan Corner Community Group will be doing to make a safer, nicer Swan corner for everyone who uses it - our next meeting on 25th March will include Councillors, representatives from the Police and Sustrans, as well as local people and Swanshurst school to discuss parking, traffic and road improvements.

Street play spreading across Birmingham

Yesterday was National Playday, and in Kings Heath we celebrated with a day of street closures to bring communities together and encourage people to play on the streets.  Goldsmith Road, Woodville Road and Albert Road all closed to cars for the day, and a range of activities were coordinated by the residents of the streets.

It was supported by Hall Green Arts Forum through music activities (provided by Musicshaker Fiona Howe), and also by our pioneering 'Kings Heath Space Explorer' project.  Parks4Play (part of Dens of Equality) provided a range of creative activities, the Library service with street stories and Birmingham City Council were instrumental in providing support to close the roads.

We sent out our young reporters to talk to some of the revellers at Goldsmith Road and Woodville Road:

An estimated 600 people in total took part - mainly residents of the streets themselves - all three streets were visited by Sarah Falkland from Midlands today and was reported live at 1:30 and 3 min clip available on Midlands at 6:30 too:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b037xkkk/Midlands_Today_07_08_2013/?t=21m33s

Laura Watts from Parks for Play was also interviewed on WM Radio and ITV central.

Also some great photos of the day:

Street coordinators will meet in September with City Councillors and other partner organisations (like Hall Green Arts Forum) as the newly formed 'Kings Heath and Moseley Playing out group' and will build on success for to discuss which streets and when streets will open again for play in Birmingham.  See below a short film made for playday:

Hall Green District Arts Strategy

'Presenting officers' Ginnie Wollaston and Marcus Belben at Hall Green District Committee meeting, Council House!  Thanks to the wonders of technology the whole 3 hour meeting can be accessed online at Birmingham City Webcasting.  I think the automatic cameras in the middle sensed when a microphone was switched on (you'll notice ours glowing red) and spun round to capture the speaker. Very clever.

But if you want to avoid the hour or so informative debate on wheelie bins, then skip straight to Hall Green District Arts Strategy for ten minutes of me and Ginnie presenting each of our reports - mine was based on our main year report, also available on our site:

Short version

Full version

Great to see how much support we have for work from the Council and all looking good for future of Hall Green Arts forum - Councillor Lisa Trickett formally took responsibility for arts and culture in HG.

HuGAs at Ort

Another memorable evening at Ort cafe, this time for our Convention.  After minor blip me failing to arrange childcare and turning up late, on positive side also doubling our under 12s presence (5), total of 39 people over course of evening, convention began without some of the visuals I had been preparing, but in hindsight, emphasis should be on chat anyway, so all for the best.

Brief 2 min presentations ran well and plenty of comment on usefulness of format to increase opportunity for everyone to let us all know what we're up to and where projects going.  Also plenty of time after to find the people you want to find.

Next convention I'd like to introduce 'the HuGAs' - awards for achievement and commitment to the cause of HGA - spreading arts and culture across our district!  Not sure what the categories should be, and budget restraints means it'll probably be more an honorary thing, but I think special mention should go to some of the dedicated folk out there.

You've all been wonderful, and I'm sure I've missed loads of what's been going on, but I'd like to mention a few people by name - my nominees (please add more on comments):

Josephine Reichert from the Ort has been great in hosting events, and work for Ort Gallery - I missed the Gambian band last night, but it's impressive how much else is going on at the old printworks too.

Catriona Heatherington was outstanding at Hall Green winter market and worked hard to make arrangements (and deliver workshops) with Sarah Robbins for the fantastic Springfield Creative Family Festival.

Michael Donalds working hard for neighbouring Billesley community, represented at HG Winter Market, and probably travelled the furthest from across our extended District to make it to our Convention.

John Hill-Daniel who sadly couldn't be at our Convention, but has filmed with the young folk of Calthorpe Park (Field for the Olympics), at Paganel Primary for their Archives, and is now leading Space Exploration across our district.

Foster Darby, Tony Spencer and Pyn Stockman for pulling off a fantastic event at Calthorpe Park for Torch relay and is keeping on plugging away for local communities despite major cutbacks and setbacks, and Laura Watts from Park4Play as partners and digging deep into own resources when we ran out, to host Kings Heath Park Olympic Celebrations

Clare Bell and family who have made it to most of our meetings, including Convention.  Fantastic artists, all of them, and writers too, always generous with contacts, funding sources, everything.

Siobhan Hebert treasurer of Kings Heath Community Centre Playgroup, and her family also artists who supported the Moseley Folk Festival with wand magic, and arranged the Kings Heath CC Art fete before xmas

Big Huggies, or HuGAs to all of you! and to everyone I didn't mention.

Enclosed is comments for you to read.  One not so positive one makes me realise how important it is to keep plugging at being an inclusive friendly bunch, and to make sure our structure and attitude to open dialogue and open access should reflect that.  We've worked on social media representation with open access to all information we have, a googlegroup (like a mailing list) where anyone can write directly to all our members (just email hallgreenarts@googlegroups.com), place our meetings deliberately in public spaces like cafes, and in libraries (not a room at the back, but in the library itself).  Thanks to David Hunt, and I still owe him a bit for refreshments from last Ort - will make sure refreshments sorted in advance for next one.  But as per report, I'm aware we are not having enough art surgeries to be properly sustainable, or in enough different venues.  There has been an offer to run one in a children's centre, and I'd love to do a park one sometime too (last years was rained off).  Please send suggestions how we can make our group open and inviting.

HGA Report, Survey and convention

Please take a moment and fill in our survey to review the year.  Also stats, links and general summary can be found on our end of year report.

We'll be taking a moment to review the year at our Convention next week (Thursday 21st Feb, 5:30 to 7:30 at Ort Cafe - see last post), so if you'd rather make comment in person, hope you can make it!

We are also encouraging everyone to make short presentaitons  (2 mins) at the Convention, or bring any info about work you've done, want to do, doing in our District.  Please let me know if interested.

Hall Green Arts Convention

We're going to keep this as an informal event to get together (like surgeries).  It'll be a chance to review last year, make plans for future of arts and culture in Hall Green Constituency at Ort Cafe.  If there is material, promotional stuff for tabletops, stuff that can be projected onto walls, anything you want to bring along, please do - please arrange beforehand with me if requires a lot of space or set up.

Meet people interested in arts, culture, in Balsal Heath, Moseley, Kings Heath, Sparkbrook, Sparkhill, Hall Green for informal chat, events, funding, opportunities, and biscuits (maybe - let's see how far our budget will stretch! If not, we are in a cafe...).

This is important date in HGA calendar - lots of changes and opportunities to be announced/ confirmed/ discussed both for HGA and from Bham City Council Arts Team.

Looking forward to seeing you all.

Sun shines on Hall Green winter market

Steve Gove-Humphries, Chair of forum and event coordinator
introduces the day

A glorious day at Hall Green winter market, with over 500 people attending over the course of the day.

HGA provided BCC 'Arts on the move' bus where Meddy Ranks performed all afternoon - Jamaican international superstar you will be able to catch next at Edgewood Hall for a Festive Party.  From the start he improvised on the spot singing celebrating all things Hall Green and at the winter market.

Moseley Village Band and Catriona Heatherington provided music and storytelling in the Library all afternoon too.  There was balloons, jokes, art & craft, Punch'n'Judy, facepainting, and a great range of market goods - for more of the market and other of the activities organised by Hall Green Neighbourhood Forum, see We Are B28.

Acting Local thinking global

A great event bringing together a range of people all interested in working together to improve our community.  Excellent to hear about the Modbury case study and streetPlay in Bristol - very inspiring.  Some great analysis and tips to develop campaigns, and to have the thoughts of Caroline and Marylyn about our KH community and how we can work better together.  Please see film:

Also the webpages: http://actinglocalthinkingglobal.wordpress.com for more info.  A great event for HGA spreading the message taht we can make a difference, with our partners, to make things better.

Thank you ESRC, Marylyn and Caroline.

Mobile arts on KH Square

Mobile arts units was well used by young people on Kings Heath Square this Friday.  All Saints Youth Project have been running workshops throughout the week of half term, and for the final day, the mobile unit supported activities.  In the morning a stay and play group from All Saints Community Centre ran halloween activities outside, swiftly followed by a local band from the youth club.  Later on Meddy Ranks ran drum workshops from the unit.  It was also an opportunity to meet up on a cold day and have some fun.

For me, it was great to see young people on the square in half term playing music and just hanging out.  Young people in Kings Heath are seen as responsible for so many of the 'problems' in Kings Heath, while at the same time youth services, library services and other activities are being either cut or reduced.

On November 5th Kitchen Garden Cafe will host a debate on problems in in Kings Heath and what we can do, hosted by University of Birmingham.  Key issues already identified in our area has been road safety and anti-social behaviour.

Ort Surgery

A fanastic night at Ort Gallery for our art surgery.  Over 30 people attended for lively discussion about car culture, flamenco guitar, scrap sculpture, anglo-saxon storytelling, eco house design for 21st century, space exploration, family life, the shape of Balsall Heath and Kings Heath of the future, Art InsideOutside, art all over the place, graphics and cartoons...I've missed a few, but as someone put on their comment, there were a lot of very interesting folk there.  Also a great exhibition in the gallery, wine and nuts (thanks David), night of music (see video clip) after.

We've added quite a few more names to our mailing list, and was an excellent opportunity to discuss plans for the next six months, with the presentation of our Interim Report.  Also sad news that Tony Spencer can no longer be our Drum contact, through long term injury - we all wish him well.  However Ian Sergeant will be stepping in, and sure we'll all be getting to know him better soon.

Below are some intersting links to some of people there - please add to the list if you can.  Also a few comments and pictures

Wings, Middle Earth and Martineau Gardens

It's been a busy weekend, if a little rainy.  If, like us, you got to see half of Wings of Desire in the rain on Friday night, you'll be pleased to know those who made it on saturday had a treat.

The every popular Middle Earth Weekend celebrated 75 years of the publication of the Hobbit at Sarehole Mill, and Martineau Gardens had their Spring Fair including live performances from Black Adder Morris, Carlo Mahalo and the G-Strings Ukulele band,  wildlife activities and drop-in pottery sessions organised for children.

Hall Green Arts and Artists were there, of course - here is photo gallery:
